Prometheus

Poor Prometheus, a figure to be pitied!
All he did was bring the spark to mankind;
rare gift wrought in the observation deck.
Knowing the ways of people, they probably
took the gift with barely any gratitude,
immediately making a kill and cooking.
Turning their backs on the abject figure
(without so much as a half-formed smile)
who even now reclines on a stone, waiting
for Zeus' Eagle to finish its course yet again ...

♘ Year of The Cavalier ♞

Year of The Cavalier

First new moon touches perigee now as Venus goes direct
The time to draw one's bow and aim is over
No further need to reflect ...

Unless your sign be equine
Then hold your horses still
Though they're champing at the bit
Close the stable door
Or bolt beyond, those broncos will

Wooden Trojan stallion stand silently in wait
Flames of war burning all around
Can consume at any rate

Reign in thy steed noble knight
From high and haughty saddle
Must thee occasionally dismount
Lead ponies down to water's edge
Let them drink of their own account

Against symbolic windmills, like Don Quijote bravely tilt
Head cavalry through its last heroic hurdle
Upon mustang thy blood spilt!

Tribute To H.P. Lovecraft

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!

"In His House at R'lyeh, Dead Cthulhu waits dreaming,
yet He shall rise and His kingdom shall cover the Earth!"

Tribute to H.P. Lovecraft

Out beyond the confines of physical space itself
At the very heart of a much darker universe than ours
Sits the supratemporal Court of Azathoth — Nucleus of Chaos.

From there proceeded to this sphere, timeless outer gods.
Not deities in the usual sense, but rather destructive Dæmon,
Who bathed in the torrid luminescence of primordial galaxies
Long before human prehistory.

Reputedly, Azathoth's own envoy edified the earliest pyramids:
Known to us as the Black Pharaoh: Nyarlathotep.
Through him we learned of that other dread Lord, Cthulhu.

Lying in eldritch slumber among the ruins of his submerged city;
R'lyeh rests deep in the sea waiting for malign astros to align.

Soon Dagon shall roam the land as he now roams marine trenches
Alongside the she-goat Shub-Niggurath and her thousand vile offspring.

Only then will mankind recognize its utter insignificance amid such cosmic competition...
Our futile vanity outmeasured against powers which would be better left unknown!

Balam Ahau (Lord Jaguar) Mythic May Vol. 6

Balam Ahau

Mounted on horseback with arms across chest
It suddenly dawned
That Jaguar as worshipped by the Toltecs
Was an ideal.
A visionary fusion of all that is noble in ape
And feline alike.

Unmitigated ferocity plus stealthy mobility
Granted by Totemic beasts;
Unflinchingly attentive reptile, crafty coyote
Chimeric eclipsed sun
Whose illustrious wingspan brightens emblazoned
Against the moon.

Prowling through mortality with vigilance
Every act dignified
Growling only when necessity dictates
Amidst backdrops espied
Trailing ziggurat lightning ricochets off
Edges of mind!

Pot-Bellied Buddhas (Mythic May Vol. 5)

Pot-Bellied Buddhas

Buddhism remains relatively new in North America and Europe.
It's also been largely misunderstood and misrepresented by the mainstream media.

For one thing, people have come to confuse Budai with the Buddha.

What's the difference you ask? Well, Budai was a fat Chinese monk whom we're told used to travel the countryside carrying a sack full of sustenance (similar to Santa Claus).

In other words, he wasn't the same as Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha from ancient India.

The causes of this commonplace misconception aren't complicated:
As Christ is an honorary title meaning "Anointed One", so does Buddha mean, "Awakened One".

Said title has been given to many monks after the original Shakyamuni.

Some believe Budai (Hotei in Japanese) was an incarnation of future Buddha Maitreya. However, that's beside the point, since Siddhartha Gautama preceded him nonetheless.

Therefore, people who rub Budai's belly for good luck are merely indulging in an ignorant superstition that has at best, only a tenuous semantic connection to its source!

ItzQuauhtli's Prophecy

ItzQuauhtli's Prophecy

Forged in Tonatiuh's heart, his feathers were slates of antimatter

ItzQuauhtli was recognized as a reflection of Great Cosmic Eagle

Which North-American Natives called: Thunderbird.

Analogous to Horus in Egyptian lore; whose eyes are equally solar and lunar.

Or Garuda in Hinduism, with Vishnu riding atop his back.

Like Mercury (closest to the sun) he served as a messenger.

The Aztecs associated this Eagle with Huitzilopochtli — god of war and patron of the arts.

Sent to Earth late during the Fifth age, he heralded Quetzalcoatl's return

While also warning that it would come hand-in-hand with Tezcatlipoca's release ...

For the nine lords of Xibalba known as Bolon Yokte are present at both the beginning and end of time!

The Four Tezcatlipocas (Mythic May Vol. 3)

The Four Tezcatlipocas

Aztec legends relate that Ometeotl
———Lord and Lady pair
———the original creator
Had four sons who sat at each corner of our young cosmos.
These newborn deities were dubbed Tezcatlipoca (smoking mirrors)
Not unlike the veil of illusion, which the Hindu Vedas call Maya.

To the East stood Quetzalcoatl; Feathered Serpent, whose face shone white.
From deep South came Huitzilopochtli; Hummingbird Sorcerer and blue-faced warrior.
Westward arrived Xipe Totec; Flayed Lord of agriculture whom bore a bloody visage.
From far North came Tezcatlipoca proper; black in aspect and with a dark soul to match.

Back then, the Earth was covered by primordial waters where a crocodile named Cipactli swam.
Black Tezcatlipoca even lost a leg to Cipactli when he was trying to seed the planet
So the four brothers made an aquatic god (Tlaloc) and goddess (Chalchiuhtlicue) to reign over the deeps.
Tamed by these siblings, the oceans receded and dry land was then populated with giants.

During the first age Tezcatlipoca himself became the sun, but his light was far too dim.
Quetzalcoatl could not tolerate his poor lighting and so knocked him out of the sky.
Incensed———Tezcatlipoca unleashed a horde of mighty Jaguars into the world.
Since night had befallen, the giants of that first age were hunted to extinction!

In the second age Quetzalcoatl beamed from above, having created a new folk.
His people were not very tall but over time they began thinking too highly of themselves.
Because they took the gods for granted, Tezcatlipoca turned them into monkeys.
Disliking their transformation, Quetzalcoatl descended as Lord Huracan (the hurricane) and blew them all away!

A third age dawned during which Tlaloc rose to illuminate the days of another race.
Unfortunately, Tezcatlipoca moved in on his wife Xochiquetzal, the goddess of love.
Seeing this made Tlaloc jealous and he refused to irrigate any crops down below.
Everybody cried out for relief from this dreadful drought but rather vengeful, Tlaloc hailed fire instead!

Consequently, Earth needed to be remade in the fourth age from the third era's ashes.
Hence, Chalchiuhtlicue ascended to give off her luminescence.
Yet ever a scoundrel, callous Tezcatlipoca accused her of vainglory.
Heartbroken by his persistent critique, that world was drowned in her divine tears!

Finally, Quetzalcoatl descended to the Earth's core as big black ant and retrieved grains of sacred corn.
Dousing them with his own blood, he created humankind as we know ourselves.
Meanwhile warlike Huitzilopochtli arose to heaven and became a fifth sun.
Then Tezcatlipoca convinced us that bloodletting should be our repayment...

Wars raged upon Terra Firma for millennia in the name of one god or another.
Quetzalcoatl vanished, betrayed by his evil twin brother, yet vowing to return.
Xipe Totec's veins were gradually drained by bloodthirsty inhumanity.
Sanctity is nowhere to be seen now since cynical people shun any gods whatsoever.

However, Huitzilopochtli is also a patron of the arts and he desires Metanoia.
If we can transcend life's rigors through sheer artistry then there still may be hope left for us.
Only such Toltec artisans could summon Quetzalcoatl and might even revive Xipe Totec.
Otherwise, cruel Tezcatlipoca surely has many more upheavals in store for us during the sixth sun called Tonatiuh.

Mythos (Mythic May Vol. 1)

Mythic May: Every Friday this month will feature a tributary piece to Mythos, Mother of Religion and eternal wellspring of sacred imagery.

Mythos

Like Shadrach in the sacrificial furnace
He strides through all flame as a phantom
Exalted by the hamadryad chorus
With a heartbeat that cowers lofty Titans
When stirred to a passionate frenzy
He claws at the roots of Ygdrasil

His twin sister mimics these motions
Her gilded arms undulate on the wind
Extolled through the song of Hesperides
With laughter becalms their green dragon
When pushed to the other extreme
She calls for the maids of Valhalla

He lives in the sword of a king

She sleeps in the depths of a lake

He dies at the end of one world

And into a new one she wakes.
