Charlemagne by Guest Bard Kerin Gedge

Today's poetical history lesson comes to us courtesy of Kerin Gedge. Check out his project: The Vocabuverse.

Kerin Gedge, a projectionist coping with the lack of much to do when his Employer went digital years ago, decided to use his downtime to rewrite the English Dictionary as poetry (mainly because he'd always wanted to read it but frankly found it boring). Recently made redundant thanks to technology,  Kerin lives in New Zealand and is exploring career options in between writing The Vocabuverse as well as being a full time Dad!

Charlemagne

There was a king called Charlemagne
Charles the first also his name

King of the Franks in seven sixty eight
Later on a King in Italy
Remembered throughout history
By his designation: Charles the Great!

Since in the West Rome’s Empire fell
The books about those days do tell
He was the first in three whole centuries

To bear the title “Emperor”,
And Holy Roman Emperor,
Crowned so by Pope Leo number three.

After fall of Roman Empire
He was the first king to acquire
Most of Western Europe in his grasp

Which he ruled for thirteen years
Until he left earth’s mortal sphere
In eight one four when alas he breathed his last.

Bluegrass and Shoplifting by Guest Bard JD DeHart

JD DeHart is a teacher and writer.  His work has appeared in Eye On Life Magazine, The Commonline Journal, and Steel Toe Review, among others.

Bluegrass and Shoplifting

During the summer, there was a face

that would become familiar one day while other faces
screamed to be ignored. The hammer dulcimer
made its sound and the beard on stage sang
a song about a lost truck in the woods.
She listened for a bit before going  “shopping”.
She paused when the siren alarm went off,

yet was always allowed to pass with the CD in her purse
(a collection of late 90’s music - a soundtrack).
She ate some seaweed not because it was enjoyable,
but because it was eccentric; then sped
along narrow country roads like a NASCAR driver,
careening disastrously all the way home!

Prometheus by Guest Bard JD DeHart

Prometheus

Poor Prometheus, a figure to be pitied!
All he did was bring the spark to mankind;
rare gift wrought in the observation deck.
Knowing the ways of people, they probably
took the gift with barely any gratitude,
immediately making a kill and cooking.
Turning their backs on the abject figure
(without so much as a half-formed smile)
who even now reclines on a stone, waiting
for Zeus' Eagle to finish its course yet again ...

Blue Crystal Eagle by Special Guest Kleomichele Leeds

Editor's Note: Kleomichele Leeds is a Yogini and Poet, as well as an expert on Mayan Calendrics and Cosmology. She keeps a blog tracking the sacred Tzolk'in HERE and is also involved in producing a docu-drama entitled Shift of The Ages. In Yucatec Mayan: Men = 'Eagle'. In Quiche Mayan, Tz'ikin = 'bird'. Those are the names of this glyph; our hallowed Kin representing a quintessential Wavespell!

Flights of Fancy by Guest Bard Roger Still

Editor's Note: Today's selection of Doggerel comes to us courtesy of Roger Still, who humbly describes himself as a new writer. Though his poems may leave you wanting more, he effortlessly lifted the AntiPoetic Gauntlet of Poésie Sans Poète (No I, ME, MY, or MINE - see Submissions page). Find out more about him HERE.

The Unicorn Hammer

"What is that?" the child asked

Eyeing the shiny object with speculation.

"That, is a Unicorn Hammer," the old man replied.

"What’s it for?" the child asked.

"Why, for bashing in the skulls of beautiful

Mythical creatures," the old man answered.

The child cried and cried while the old man

Simply chuckled to himself.

Captive to The Fool

Notice how the king is entranced

By the noises of the jester

Though they are crude, he is in love

With the netherworld of life

Watching as his jester takes him

To the dingiest depths of depravity

Then scales onto heights of impropriety

When the time for bequeathing comes

The jester will walk away with jewels.

Sanskrit

Facing a cave wall, some egg heads

Considered the etchings and characters

Left behind by ancient architects

They must have had something in common

Head, heart, lust, recipes?

But their faces are long buried

Beneath tides of earth and moss

Someday, they will be in a museum

Someday perhaps, they shall be truly rediscovered...

Proverbial Pinball by Guest Thinker M.P.L.

Editor's Note: Is there no middle ground to be found between the camps of Free-Will and Fate? Isn't life (like playing pinball) more a mix of both? This week's contributor divulges a compelling stream of thought on said subject ...

M.P.L. Is a world traveller, professional driver, and an accomplished bassist with a flair for the dramatic. He plans on winning the lottery, purchasing an island, then building a biosphere on it and flying into space to found and rule his own colony!

Proverbial Pinball

Only through the trials and tribulations of this thing called life are we able to consider fate and chance as plausible conditions of the human spirit and persona, because the attributes we personify are in direct cognitive relativity to the Being which we've become due to the experiences we've endured thus far.
We have a choice to reflect upon the days passing. Whatever information we choose to process and how we deal with particular circumstances is completely within our own free will and up to one's ability to cope.
Options for adapting alongside the developments of any given situation always become available in due process.
Engaging thought patterns and contemplating the directives of a message before reacting to an interaction may rather entice us to reply with a rhetorical question in order to clarify any misconstrued ideas and thus allow for improved communication.
Only through constant reevaluation are we able to inhibit or exhibit changes in ourselves.
Of course the plethora of knowledge acquired from vast past experience can help out just as well - providing that such memories don't result in victimizing us. Correct?

Echoes of Echoes (by Guest Writer Michael Napiorkowski)

Editor's Note: This is a prosaic response to Echoes of Emptiness.
Michael Napiorkowski practices Nichiren Buddhism and writes about it here: http://ichinensanzen.ca/

Echoes of Echoes

Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is Form can also be expressed within the framework of Cause and Effect; Cause IS Effect and Effect IS Cause.

This is one of the profound expressions of the Lotus Sutra: the simultaneity of cause and effect or the co-arising, interdependent relationship of all phenomena being both cause and effect simultaneously in an ever present "now."

This is equally expressed through the symbolism of the lotus flower blooming and producing its seeds at the same time (which is rare).

The incredible part of this teaching is that although everything is an expression of "effect," concurrently everything is an initiation of "cause." This is what breaks the determinism trap by showing us that our lax and lazy concept of time as inert billiard balls bouncing off one another is not completely correct. Reality is far more complex than that. There's nothing that's isolated or complete in and of itself.

Ideas of nouns, objects or things (completed effects) only exist within language. In reality these are simply concrete concepts for a transitory, provisional existence. All reality would be better described as a verb or even more correctly as Emptiness.

Hence the importance of Meditation...

Our tendency is to limit ourselves based on that incorrect understanding of nouns or of our own self-identity as an objective Being. If we approach our lives like this then we end up trapped within the cyclical manifestation of inner tendencies and outward actions (Karma).

Meditation allows us to break our attachment to thoughts of a limited self-identity and conclusive opinions of reality as a collection of parts (nouns), and to see instead that everything is an ineffable process (verb) known as "now."

Rigid identity is just an illusion that we trap ourselves in. By not identifying conclusively with nouns, we break the cycle of Samsara and see clearly that our actions within the world are defining characteristics of how we experience our actual "self".

We're actually composed by those relationships we temporarily have with everything and everyone else, and vice versa. As such, all can be better understood as the open space between events or processes of interconnectedness.

If we free ourselves from self-imposed tendencies then our actions will be naturally liberated, and in that sense our "identity" shall follow suit.

Śūnyatā is thus the great non-identity to identify with - Svaha!

Guest Star by Guest Bard Colin James

Writer's Bio: Colin James has a chapbook of his poems out from Thunderclap Press. He works in Energy Conservation and is a great admirer of the Scottish landscape painter, John Mackenzie.

Kudos to Colin for picking up the AntiPoetic gauntlet of poésie sans poète!

GUEST STAR

That scene where you wake up
                                 early at a friend's house,
wander down stairs, start the coffee maker
and make your way to your favorite chair,
when you spot something creepy sitting there.
A species with the head of a dog
and the body of a deer,
                                 lounging provocatively in your chair.
You file it in the category
                                 of sexual ambiguity,
all the while drinking your coffee
careful not to make eye contact
or heavens forbid, engage it in
                                 any sort of polite conversation.
The rest of the house won't be up for hours,
and you resist the urge to
look back over your shoulder as
you head down the stone path
                                 to retrieve the morning paper.
                                 With your luck—it'll be late!

Irrelephant by Guest Bard Kathleen Radigan

Writer's Bio: Kathleen Radigan was a high school student (when she wrote this).  She loves talking to people, reading books, reading people and talking to books.  She also writes music and swings on swings regularly.

Kudos to Kathleen for picking up the Antipoetic gauntlet of poésie sans poète!

Irrelephant

The intelligence of elephants

irrelevant, but eloquent

their clumsy sort of elegance

is one of many elements.

And when that wisdom elevates

it’s difficult to celebrate

for once we see our cells relate

thoughts start to accelerate.

Well wisdom seems aristocratic

dusted down from someone’s attic

pulled apart and cleared of static

(fluctuations are erratic).

Oh how we trace the web life spins

parts swept away like bowling pins!

Neither consciousness nor human prints

will never match an elephant's.

Re-Union (side B) by Special Guest Earthen Hawk

Editor's Note: This current piece is a direct poetic response to: Re-UnionKudos to Earthen Hawk for maintaining the literary form of poésie sans poète (Poetry devoid of I, ME, MY and MINE).

Re-Union (side B)

Aural narcotics and literary highs
Scraps of nature in Crackton will have to suffice
Asanas at intervals
Anti-logos kinetic
Here it rains synchronicity
